Shelter workers from Seal Beach, California were astounded when they found a purebred Husky just wandering around the streets of their city. The pooch looked terrific, and it seemed that he wasn’t homeless. They didn’t think that someone would just abandon him. The staff thought that maybe he got lost or ran away from home.
All their questions were answered when they finally had a chance to scan him for a microchip. And as it turned out, the dog, which they later named Nate, had a much more terrible backstory.
Thankfully, everything worked out in the end.
Animal testing
The information on Nate’s microchip showed that he was registered to a laboratory notoriously known for horrifying animal testing practices. The shelter staff doesn’t exactly know what was done to the Husky, but it seemed that it had a devastating effect on his behavior.
They observed that Nate was very reserved and skittish around people. He also had a hollow look in his eyes that reflected fear. Although he wasn’t aggressive or violent to people or other animals, the workers could tell he didn’t trust anyone. So they constantly showed the pooch affection so he would change.
Nate’s behavior started showing some improvement, but the workers could tell that it was going at a very slow pace compared to the progress of their other rescue dogs. After four months, they decided to get him some help.
Transformation
The shelter got in touch with the Beagle Freedom Project, a nonprofit rescue group that specializes in dealing with animals subjected to laboratory testing. Generally, these creatures develop psychological issues and cannot function as pets.
The organization agreed to take Nate in and gave him to one of their seasoned foster volunteers. With the right treatment, Nate started to blossom. His needs were met, and within a few months, he was ready for his forever home.
