Penny is just one of the many dogs that were turned over to Columbia-Greene Humane Society. Like many of them, she was abused and abandoned by her previous owners. As if her suffering wasn’t enough, she was also forced to fend for herself and live on New York’s busy streets.
Since she doesn’t know how to live as a stray, Penny’s body ended up shrinking. She didn’t know where to go to get food, and whenever she would manage to find something to satisfy her hunger, other strays would steal it from her. The poor thing also lost most of her fur, making it difficult for her to endure the cold season.
Desperate to have a family to turn to, Penny sought refuge at a stranger’s house. She risked her safety by showing up at the man’s doorstep. Penny wasn’t sure if she was going to get beaten up for it. All she knew then was she needed someone to help her get out of the terrible situation she was in.
The pooch was lucky that the man living in the house has a heart for animals. The downside to it was, he didn’t have the capacity to adopt her. So, he called the police and asked them to help him find a home for Penny. When they got her, they decided to turn her over to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society.
Another chance for Penny
The staff at the shelter were speechless when they saw the open lacerations on Penny’s face and neck. She didn’t have enough fur on her body, and she looked like a walking skeleton. They immediately designed a plan for Penny’s treatment since they knew that they were running against time.
They also did an investigation on what happened to Penny. Based on her appearance, it looked like her previous owners just dumped her by the side of the road on a frigid night. It didn’t surprise them that Penny went to a stranger’s home. She desperately wanted warmth, comfort, and food.
Home at last
The staff also managed to find a home for Penny. They’re giving her all the love, care, and affection that she deserves. A week after therapy, Penny looked like a completely different dog. She gained weight, she started to grow some of her fur back, and she looked happy. The doctors were thrilled to see how well she was responding to her treatment.
