Fatima Guevara was browsing Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s Facebook page when she came across a video of a puppy squirming around the floor. Fatima knew that the pup needed her, so she decided to help it.
Fatima immediately contacted the shelter and volunteered to foster the puppy named Cantu. Fatima went to the rescue, and the workers told her that Cantu was born from a backyard breeder.

The employees also told Fatima that Cantu was the only puppy who survived among his littermates. The workers shared that Cantu was abandoned in a high-kill shelter at six weeks old when they noticed that he could not walk nor stand on his own.
The breeders knew that no one would bother buying a disabled puppy, so they decided to abandon him. Fatima knew that puppies like Cantu are often overlooked because most people prefer not to worry about the health conditions that they have.
Fatima said that most potential dog owners want a regular life with their pets, which is why they opt for less problematic dogs. However, Fatima decided to take a chance on Cantu by fostering him because she wants him to find his fur-ever family.
Fatima recalled that she drove back to her home with Cantu for four hours and that he peed on her thrice. Fatima shared that she noticed how horrible Cantu’s legs were when she placed him on the floor.
Fatima brought Cantu to the vet the following morning and received a heartbreaking diagnosis that her dog might be paralyzed for the rest of his life. Fatima immediately scheduled him for physical therapy sessions and bought him a wheelchair.
Fatima shared that Cantu transformed into a happier puppy as soon as he rode his wheelchair. Fatima decided to adopt Cantu because she grew attached to him, and she could not imagine life without him.
