Jiminy Cricket was a teeny tiny Pittie puppy that weighed less than 4 pounds when found. He was so sick, and that was probably the reason why someone decided to place him inside a cardboard box and then left him by the dumpster outside of Bainbridge Decatur County Humane Society in Georgia. Thankfully, shelter workers found him before the garbage men came and picked up the trash.
The humane society was overwhelmed with tons of abandoned puppies under their care so they reached out to their rescue partner Leon County Humane Society in Tallahassee, Florida. Quickly, one of the volunteers rushed and picked up Jiminy. From there, she took him straight to the vet’s clinic for medical care.
The young dog was covered in mange, swarmed by fleas, and full of intestinal wounds. He whimpered in so much pain and he whimpered as he gasped for air. He also had a high fever, was lethargic, and had a very low plate count. He was in the worst imaginable condition.
Jiminy had very little chance of survival. The rescuers didn’t know if he would even make it through the night. But no matter how bad his condition was, he refused to give up and continued to fight for his life.
The following morning, Shannon Colavecchio, a supporter and volunteer of the Leon County Humane Society, came to the shelter and offered to foster the sick puppy. She had no idea what kind of care he needed but she was determined to help. She brought him home and promised to do all that she could to make him feel better.
For the first few days, the puppy felt so terrified that he did nothing but eat and sleep. But about a week later, he felt safe and comfortable enough to explore his new surroundings. He even cuddled with his foster mom and her two boys.
Soon, Jiminy recovered. He became a healthy and happy boy under the care of his foster mom. He was ready to move on and find his own family, but he did not have to search any further.
There was no way Shannon would let Jiminy go somewhere else. She fell really deeply in love with him and so, she adopted him and made him an official member of the Colavecchio family.
