Early this month, Italian farmer Christian Mallocci assisted his dog Spelacchia as she gave birth. It took her many hours to bring each of the five puppies into the world.
Mallocci was overcome with emotion upon seeing them all. Needless to say, the small creatures provided him a reason to smile during the quarantine.
When he observed all five of them sleeping soundly next to their mother, he realized something was off. Upon looking closer, he saw that one of the puppies had green fur! All the other puppies shared their mother’s white coat.
Mallocci could not quite comprehend why the puppy had green fur. The fact that he knew Spelacchia was a mixed breed did not help him make sense of the puppy’s green fur. Concerned, he asked his pals and searched online for answers.
Possible contact between the puppy and the biliverdin in Spelacchia’s womb was one of the results of his investigation. According to studies, the pigment is responsible for the green color of bruises.
The Italian farmer exhaled a great sigh of relief when he learned that the dog would not remain permanently green. As it ages, the green coat will begin to fade. He was also extremely grateful that the puppy was normal and there was nothing to worry about.
Although green puppies are uncommon, this is not the first time a green puppy has made headlines. A child in Massachusetts welcomed a green dog into his household in 2017. Early this year, another green-coated fluff ball was born in Asheville, North Carolina and his family refers to him as “The Hulk” because of the color.
It’s not difficult to predict what name Mallocci gave to Spellachia’s green child. He decided to name the fluff ball “Pistachio,” which, if you ask us, is very appropriate.
