Blackie is a 14-year-old dog whose owners have neglected him for the majority of his life. The black dog was mostly kept outside their Texas home and was not given any medical attention when he needed it.
His owners soon surrendered him at the Austin Animal Center days before Christmas. Because he did not get treatment for his cataracts and glaucoma, which he also had, he had gone blind by that time.
The staff at the shelter also discovered that the elderly dog’s chest was developing a tumor. According to the shelter’s veterinarians, the dog did not have long to live. They only considered euthanasia as a viable choice. It was possible that the dog could not endure several procedures.
Brunie Drumond, a volunteer at the Austin Animal Center, found out about Blackie’s predicament and felt terrible for the dog. After learning that the senior dog had spent the majority of his life outdoors, she felt compelled to make Blackie feel what it means to be loved.
Brunie volunteered to take the dog home and administer palliative care. Based on what the veterinarians said, she anticipated that Blackie would only live for a few days. She decided to make his final days the most memorable of his life.
Blackie had a wonderful holiday season with his foster mother. Brunie lavished him with affection and care, and the dog was happier than ever. He was so delighted that he became vivacious and fun. His condition improved significantly.
Although they will no longer remove the tumor, Brunie and the shelter staff hope that the dog will live as long as possible, pain-free and happy. Even though he may not have much time left, he would no longer have to sleep outdoors in the cold and by himself. He is now surrounded with love and he also understands what it means to be a family member.
