Known for their devotion and loyalty to humans, dogs are the best companions during times of war. The U.S. military has started training military dogs during World War II. In the decades that followed, military dogs have been in combat with soldiers during every major conflict.
Belgians Malinois has become one of the three standard breeds serving in the military because of their intelligence, mild aggression, and adaptability. In high-stress situations, these canines can be relied on to protect their handlers. Layka, a trained Belgian Malinois, proved her loyalty to her unit while serving as a military dog in Afghanistan.
During duty, Layka’s team came under fire and Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald sent the dog into the building to scout and verify if it was vacant. However, she was hit four times at close range by an AK-47. Despite being seriously injured, Layka assaulted and restrained the attacker saving Sgt. McDonald and other team members.
The squad carried the injured dog to get some medical attention as soon as the ambush was over. Even after seven hours in the operating table, the doctors could not save one of her front legs.
The army appreciated Layka’s act of bravery and gave her the American Humane Military Hero Award. But it was also the end of Layka’s military service because of her lost leg.
The soldier realized he wanted to bring Layka home after getting discharged. However, there were concerns from the administration regarding the dog’s trauma and aggressiveness. They knew that like soldiers, transitioning to civilian life will be hard for Layka. But the soldier fought hard for Layka’s adoption, owing his life to the dog.
When she was at last brought home, Layka showed Julian’s three little kids love and dedication. The pooch demonstrated that she was not a vicious dog, but only an animal who deserved living in a good home.
