One of the most passionate ways to give back to one’s country is to join the Navy. But returning home after service might be unpleasant and unnerving for veterans.
Last year, on Veteran’s Day, a Navy veteran named Damian decided to use dogs to bring serenity and support to his fellow veterans.
After the September 11 attacks in 2001, Damian chose to join the Navy to serve his nation. He served proudly in the Navy for 14 years as an explosive disposal technician, and that included three deployments to Afghanistan.
Damian, however, developed depression, PTSD, and even a traumatic brain injury as a result of his duty. This is why, in 2018, while at Columbia University, he opted to get a service dog named Shai. The two immediately created a solid bond.
When Damian first encountered Shai, the dog placed his paw on his chest and his forehead on his.
Damian and Shai trained together for the next few weeks, with Shai practicing any commands given to her. Soon, Damian was able to cope with his PTSD, thanks to the dog, who even encouraged his owner to go outside and reconnect with nature.
Damian used to only stay in his flat, isolated from others, before he met Shai. He claimed that the dog’s calmness and quiet helped him maintain his composure.
Damian got a position as a trainer at K9s for Warriors, a charity in the US, after graduating from Columbia last year. He spent his days there assisting other veterans in finding and experiencing healing through the development of a bond with dogs.
Canines help you heal, and this is something that Damian believes in strongly. It is fascinating to observe how trainers transformed dogs and to witness the beginning of their journey. He remarked that the stories and what these dogs would do to offer their all for their masters are what makes the entire experience special.
