Randall Harris was certain that he may never see his dog Peanut ever again after she disappeared during the night of March 17.
The Chihuahua was directly in front of their house in Hamilton Township, New Jersey when she went missing. Randall said that he heard a car pass by yet he didn’t see it and that the next thing he knew, Peanut was gone. He started panicking since he didn’t know whether she wandered off or was taken.
Peanut is 16 years of age, has hearing loss, and is blind on one of her eyes, so you can imagine how scared he was for her. Randall rescued her after she was left all tied up in a construction site when she was just a pup. Wanting to find her badly, Randall spent days on end searching through the areas along with his neighbors. Randall also spread the word via a local Facebook page that is for lost pets, with hopes that someone will recognize his dog. Yet Peanut didn’t show up.
That is, until Anthony Malagrino, Randall’s neighbor, heard some worrying noises after a few days had passed. According to Jennifer Hornreich, the 15-year-old’s cousin, he had heard some wailing noises that were coming from a sewer drain while he was heading home from school. Anthony was certain that what he was hearing was a dog, he took the sewer lid off and jumped right in. That was where he found the cold and terrified Peanut, who he hurriedly pulled out.
As it turns out, she fell into a drain in front of her house on the night that she disappeared. When she was found by Anthony, she had lost a few pounds and was hypothermic. A very grateful Randall immediately took his beloved pet to the vet where he was informed that Peanut was seriously close to death had he not been saved.
Thankfully, she is already recovering. Randall is so relieved that Peanut is back that he sent Anthony some money and a heartfelt thank you letter.
The town mayor even gave Anthony a Proclamation for his part in saving a life.
