Shelter Owner Goes Viral After Inviting 300 Dogs Into His Home During A Hurricane

Shelter Owner Goes Viral After Inviting 300 Dogs Into His Home During A Hurricane

Paquita Gillis November 14, 2020

For nine long years, animal lover Ricardo Pimentel had been running an animal sanctuary called Tierra de Animales right in his neighborhood’s outskirts in Cancun, Mexico. He had already taken in and cared for no less than 500 animals to date, including strays like dogs and cats and farm animals like donkeys, sheep, horses, and even chickens.

Over the years, Ricardo had encountered numerous challenges while handling the shelter, but his most difficult one yet was the recent Hurricane Delta. You see, in early October, the hurricane made its way to the shores of Cancun, eventually building up into a Category 4 storm.

Ricardo knew that the dog shelters, housing at least 300 canines, weren’t strong enough to withstand such a hurricane. So he decided to do what he had to do: invite his furry friends inside his home.

With the help of some volunteers, Ricardo brought as many of the pups inside before the threatening hurricane made its landfall. It wasn’t an easy feat, mostly since some of the dogs were already afraid, and others had to be carried in the arms. In the end, it took them five, tiring hours to round everyone up, but Ricardo knew that it was all worth it.

Fortunately, when Hurricane Delta arrived in their area, it weakened into a Category 2 storm, creating only a bit of damage to the property. The pups were very behaved inside the house, as well, as opposed to the chaos that Ricardo expected.

The next morning after Hurricane Delta passed, the shelter owner and his team of volunteers had to do plenty of repairs on the property and couldn’t let the pups outdoors yet. So all 300 of the dogs had to stay inside the house for another day.

Despite the dogs breaking things and causing quite a mess inside the house, Ricardo said that he didn’t regret anything and would gladly do it again if the situation called for it. Look at the pack of happy and cozy pups here.
