Amazing, Heroic Pooches: Dogs Save Their Owner From The Long-Term Effects Of Her Paralysis

Amazing, Heroic Pooches: Dogs Save Their Owner From The Long-Term Effects Of Her Paralysis

Paquita Gillis November 6, 2021

One of the things that make dogs amazing is their capability to sense when their owners are in danger. As such, they are trained to become service animals that assist and protect their humans.

A woman named Alison Skillin woke up paralyzed after suffering from the complications of her disease. But she managed to pull through, thanks to the help of her three loyal dogs over the years. How was Alison saved by her pooches? Here is the incredible account of her and her dogs.

Waking up paralyzed

The 42-year-old woman has suffered from a condition called fibromyalgia, which caused long-term pains all over her body. As a result, she became disabled. This prompted the specialists to place Alison in a coma, only for her to wake up suffering from paralysis.

Nevertheless, it was Alison’s Alaskan Malamute named Icy who taught her how to stand up and walk again. It was Alison who trained her dog after reading up about the abilities of assistance dogs.

However, Icy passed away in 2013. But she found Bear, a young Alaskan Malamute mix. According to Alison, Bear did everything for her, from opening doors to unloading her washing machine.

Alison’s new pup

In 2019, Alison took home a Shiba Inu cross who she named Monk. The Shiba Inu learned what he needed to learn from Bear, so he could assist Alison properly.

Sadly, Bear passed away. Nonetheless, Monk stayed, and the said dog even inspired Alison to get out of her unhappy marriage. According to Alison, it was Monk who gave her the confidence to live by herself.

Alison said that she had a Mobile Emergency Care Service set-up installed at her home. The said service even had a button that would allow the dog to dial 999. Monk even had his own MedicAlert ID, which contained Alison’s important medical records. In case of an emergency, Monk was supposed to run to alert emergency services about Alison’s ID tag on his collar.

Indeed, Alison’s set-up with her dog and her former pets just proves how reliable dogs are not just as friends but also as service animals.
