The majority of individuals imagine a police dog to be a sturdy German Shepherd or an intelligent Belgian Malinois. A clumsy, disobedient Beagle puppy is the last thing anyone expects to see as a police dog.
But a Beagle puppy can become a police dog. Just take a look at Auggie.
Auggie, a Beagle puppy, is a proud member of the Susquehanna Township Police Department, as are all police dogs. This pup is quite pleased with his career.
He doesn’t detect explosives or catch criminals, but he performs a far more valuable function. Everyone who enters the police station gets a greeting from him and they find him to be kind, and reassuring.
Police discovered Auggie as a stray, but he was a lovable puppy that they become smitten. He was discovered in poor health, but it was presumed that he had a family caring for him because he wore a collar. He was also familiar with being in close proximity to humans.
Auggie needed to be in a secure location so officers escorted him to the Harrisburg City Humane Society for treatment of his injuries. However, despite the best efforts of the police and the shelter, Auggie’s family was never located.
The team learned after a month that no one was coming for Auggie. Before the shelter could place Auggie for adoption, however, the police agreed to adopt him in order to keep him with them at the station. As expected, Auggie was ecstatic about the idea.
Finally, Auggie was promoted to officer within the department. Instead of being hired to apprehend criminals, he was charged with seizing control of the headquarters. Auggie has food, beverages, and beds scattered throughout the property. His principal responsibility is to ensure the satisfaction of the station’s employees and guests.
Everyone is relieved to see Auggie, especially the police, the civilians, and the victims who come to the station. He manages to make everyone smile, which makes the officers more approachable. He is not the typical police dog, but he performs his job admirably.
