It may already be 2022, but we still continue to hear reports of dogs being mistreated by people in many different corners of the world. Hearing these tales is always upsetting, especially because these four-legged creatures have the purest of hearts. Thankfully, there are organizations that rescue abused pets and lavish them with affection.
Hansel, a Canadian Pit Bull from Tilbury, was among the canines assisted by one of these organizations. As a result of Ontario’s ban on Pit Bulls, he was not only used as a fighting dog, but also put on a list of dogs to undergo euthanasia.
Concerned citizen Rob Scheinberg learned about Ontario’s rule on pit bulls so he defended Hansel and the other animals on the execution list. He communicated with the authorities and did everything possible to have the court reconsider its verdict on the case.
Authorities heeded Scheinberg’s request and ceased the execution of the dogs. The canines were then evaluated to see which ones were suitable for adoption. Those that passed the examination were subsequently sent to the Florida-based non-profit group Dogs Playing For Life and Hansel was one of them.
The dog was subsequently adopted by the Philadelphia-based Throw Away Dogs Project, where he was trained to become a K-9 officer. After a year of training, he was passed over to the Millville Fire Department, who at that time was seeking an arson detection canine. This made Hansel the first Pit Bull to be hired as a K-9 officer for arson detection!
Hansel was recognized in 2021 as the Law Enforcement and Detection Hero Dog due to his devotion to his duty. As a result of his efforts, other fire departments have decided to remove Pit Bulls from their kill lists and employ them as arson detection dogs instead. Way to go, Hansel!
